Before Joseph Stalin Came into Power
Joseph Stalin (his real name Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili) was born on the 18th of December 1878 in the town of Gori, Georgia. At the age of 10 he attended a church school where Georgian children were forced to speak Russian. At the age of 12 his left arm was permanently damaged after an accident between two horse-drawn carriages.
Shortly after 1899, after reading the writings of Vladimir Lenin, Stalin decided to become a marxist revolutionary, joining Lenin's Bolsheviks in the year 1903. Stalin became a full-time outlaw and revolutionary after being marked by the Okhrana (The Department for Protecting the Public Security and Order). Stalin became one of the chief operatives of the Bolsheviks, raising money through bank robberies and ransom kidnappings.
In 1906 Stalin married Ekaterina Svanidze, who later died after fleeing to Baku, after Stalin lead a raid on a bank shipment, resulting in 40 deaths. Stalin was captured and sent to Siberia 7 times, he escaped most of these. During his last exile he was conscripted to fight for the army in World War 1, but he was unfit for fighting due to his damaged left arm.
